A land area larger than Western Europe, with more people than China, the Indian subcontinent is a lush region with commonality in food and culture. It is a new frontier to leverage food science and technology and a great arena for developing new agri-business opportunities for the benefit of the region. Opportunities for commercial growth abound, but challenges due to urban sprawl, regulatory issues, and resource conflicts, safety and trade barriers persist and come in the way of progress. To address some of these critical issues and provide a forum to exchange knowledge and expertise, an association of food scientists interested in this region has been established. It is envisioned that this association will become a center of excellence and catalyst to simulate growth in the area of food science and technology in the subcontinent.
The American Association of Food Scientists for the Indian Subcontinent (AAFSIS) includes members of the Institute of Food Technologists from the Indian Subcontinent - India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and other countries, associations, and individuals who have interest in the Indian Subcontinent.
The purpose of the AAFSIS is to provide and promote a strong and active organization of members with the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) and other associations and individuals involved in the profession of food science and technology as defined by IFT.
The overall goal is to develop leadership, to acquaint members and others with the areas of activity in food science and technology, and to promote greater interest in the profession. To implement and carry out these objectives AAFSIS shall :
promote and enhance the scientific, academic, and professional image of food science and technology related to AAFSIS countries and at IFT national and regional meetings;
- promote and improve communication and interaction among members and between students and professional, AAFSIS members, the food industry, and the public;
- encourage and enhance AAFSIS membership;
- implement and accomplish other programs and proposals consistent with the purpose and objectives of AAFSIS; and
- work with IFT to include AAFSIS as one of its affiliate groups.
